Why do cherry blossoms open out of season? Yong Guosen, a senior horticulturist and senior landscape architect, explained that the cherry trees on the campus of Wuhan University are mostly early cherry varieties, not autumn cherry blossoms that are specially designed for autumn.
Two conditions may cause cherry blossoms to bloom in autumn: first, the characteristics of certain varieties of cherry blossoms, such as October cherry, Little Higan cherry, etc., bloom in autumn is a normal phenomenon, they are called autumn cherry blossoms, and the flowering period can extend from mid-September to December; second, the climate is abnormal, when the climate is abnormal, the continuous high temperature and drought cause the cherry tree to defoliate early, and the cherry tree misjudges the season, forming flower buds in advance to germinate and bloom. In this case, the flowers are usually sparse.
Dong Likun, a senior engineer at the Institute of Plant Protection of the Wuhan Academy of Garden Sciences, further explained that plants in the Rosaceae family such as cherry blossoms, begonias, red leaf plums, and peach blossoms may also bloom twice in summer and autumn under certain conditions. This is usually because plants enter a shallow dormant state when they encounter high temperature, drought or other unfavorable environments in summer. When the temperature drops later and the environmental conditions improve, the plants resume growth, and the flower buds that have completed their development will open. This process is similar to the natural law of plants returning to bloom in spring after winter dormancy.
