An accident of carbon monoxide poisoning
More.
Reporter from Fujian Hospital of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center
(Fujian Children’s Hospital) was informed that
Department of Critical Care Medicine, Fujian Children’s Hospital
Recently, three people who used gas water heaters to take a bath were admitted.
Children suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning and falling into coma
One of the girls is 10 years old.
The other two girls are sisters.
They are 9 years old and 5 years old respectively.

The medical staff in the Department of Critical Care Medicine transported the children from the outer hospital to the department with rescue equipment such as ventilator.
Heartbeat recovery after rescue
But there is still no spontaneous breathing.
The poisoned 10-year-old girl lives in a rented house with her family. A few days ago, when she used a gas water heater to take a bath, the gas leaked, and the bathroom space was narrow and the ventilation was not smooth. She was poisoned by carbon monoxide. When her family found out, she was already unconscious, unable to respond, and her heartbeat and breathing were gone.
Parents quickly took her to the provincial children’s hospital. After intensive rescue by medical staff, the girl’s heartbeat was restored. However, due to the long time of ischemia and hypoxia, it is difficult to recover from brain damage. At present, she still has no spontaneous breathing and is in a deep coma.

The Department of Critical Care Medicine of Provincial Children’s Hospital used mild hypothermia therapy and bedside EEG monitoring equipment to treat children with carbon monoxide poisoning.
On the second day of the girl’s hospitalization, the Department of Critical Care Medicine of the hospital admitted a pair of little sisters who also suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning while taking a bath with a gas water heater.
Due to the timely detection, their condition is relatively mild, but they still have nervous system injuries such as memory loss and weakness of both lower limbs, and are currently receiving hyperbaric oxygen treatment.
"Carbon monoxide is tasteless, colorless and non-irritating, which will lead to hypoxia in human cells, tissues and organs. The poisoned person may only feel a slight headache at first, and the symptoms will become more and more serious as time goes by. " Wang Shibiao, chief physician of the Department of Critical Care Medicine, Fujian Children’s Hospital, said that in clinical practice, many poisoned people were found to have severe asphyxia, cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest, and even if the rescue was successful, there were serious sequelae of the nervous system.

The Department of Critical Care Medicine of Provincial Children’s Hospital used mild hypothermia therapy and bedside EEG monitoring equipment to treat children with carbon monoxide poisoning.
These places often happen.
Carbon monoxide poisoning incident
Wang Shizhen reminded:
Kitchen with poor ventilation using gas, toilet with improper installation of gas water heater, car compartment with air conditioner closed, and room with poor ventilation burning coal are often places where carbon monoxide poisoning incidents occur.
There are also some people who burn charcoal to cook tea or eat charcoal hot pot in a warm indoor stove, which are prone to carbon monoxide poisoning.
In daily life
How to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning?
Deputy Chief Physician Colin Min, Intensive Care Unit of Provincial Children’s Hospital, suggested:
Try not to install the gas water heater in the bathroom, but should be installed outside the bathroom near the window. If it is installed indoors, don’t close the window when bathing.
When using coal hot pot and charcoal hot pot for family dinner, pay attention to keep indoor ventilation, or open the door and open the window at the right time.
When using pipeline gas or liquefied gas tanks, it is necessary to prevent pipeline aging and gas leakage, and the gas valve should be tightened.
If gas is used at home, it is recommended to install a carbon monoxide detector and check and maintain it regularly.
Don’t sleep in a car with closed doors and windows and air conditioning. When driving for a long distance, you can open the internal circulation and open the window regularly for ventilation.
If carbon monoxide poisoning occurs
Windows should be opened immediately for ventilation to make air convection.
Quickly close the gas cooker, gas water heater valve, etc.
Let the poisoned person leave the toxic environment immediately.
Move to a place with fresh air and good ventilation.
Untie the collar button of the poisoned person’s clothes
Keep the respiratory tract unobstructed.
At the same time, pay attention to keep warm
Prevent complications.
Let the poisoned person rest quietly.
Because activities will increase the consumption of oxygen.
If conditions permit.
Patients should be given oxygen as soon as possible.
For moderate and severe poisoners
At the same time of on-site first aid
You should call 120 emergency number immediately.
